When a pitcher misses his spot against Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton, he should be expecting to get a new baseball from the umpire.
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez was the latest pitcher to find out what happens when you miss against the powerful Marlin.
In the bottom of the first inning of Tuesday's game, Martinez tried to throw a breaking ball away to Stanton. Instead, he threw a hanger that stayed in the middle of the plate.
Goodbye baseball.
Stanton crushed the ball way over the r-center field wall, and the ball appeared to have bounced off the back wall of the stadium. Martinez didn't even bother to turn around when the ball left the bat, knowing that he wasn't ever going to see that baseball again.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, Stanton's blast is now tied—with himself—for the longest home run of the season.
Stanton's MLB-leading 26th home run of the season gave the Marlins a 2-0 lead.
