Rich Aurilia wanted to come out this season and be a major contributor for the Giants. On Sunday Afternoon he made his first big contribution.
Aurilia homered off Adam Wainwright to lead off the bottom of the seventh and give the Giants a one-run lead that they would not surrender for the rest of the afternoon.
The Giants started the game well taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with Randy Winn's sacrifice fly.
The Cardinals tied it up in the third inning with a Ryan Ludwick sacrifice fly. The game was tied 1-1 heading to the fifth.
Jonathan Sanchez took the hill for the Giants and was throwing well till the top of the fifth. The Cardinals took a 3-1 with a two-run double by Nick Stavinoha that took Sanchez out of the game.
The Giants came right back in the bottom of the fifth. Rich Aurilia singled to start the inning and Aaron Rowand doubled to left—suddenly the Giants had runners second and third with nobody out.
Edgar Renteria grounded into a fielder's choice and Aurilia came home. Pablo Sandoval then came up with two outs and delivered a clutch single to right to tie the game, 3-3.
The next inning Aurilia came up huge.
Aurilia came up and smacked a pitch from Cardinals' SP Adam Wainwright deep into the left-field bleachers at AT&T Park, and the Giants had the lead.
Bengie Molina added a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth and the score was 5-3 heading into the ninth.
Brian Wilson came in and he gave up a single to Albert Pujols to lead off the inning. Then he retired the next three batters and had wrapped up his 12th save of the season.
The Giants (25-24) begin a three-game series with the Washington Nationals (13-36) on Tuesday. Tim Lincecum (4-1) takes the mound for the Giants, as they will be looking for their seventh win in their last nine games.
