The Giants opened up the season 2-1 against the Brewers. Enough of a great start to pump life back into what has been a downer for most Giants fans the past few years.
But the series that started in San Diego on Friday was enough to remind the fans of those embarrassing times.
A game in which San Diego, the Little League team of the NL West, should have lost, they ended up winning. Was it the bad defense, the hitting, away game, or just the pitching?
It may be hard to point to one reason. But as a Giants fan I feel it's time to finally come out and say what I've been preaching for two years now. Barry Zito... enough said.
Zito only pitched four innings and threw 39 pitches in the first inning. This included giving up three first-inning runs. This gave him an ERA of 5.21 in only his first start.
Zito came over from the A's with a $126 million contract. In the first season, he proved he was a bust. This should be enough to upset Giants fans, but like with Bonds, there was denial that he had passed his prime.
Last year Zito did not get his first win until May 23. They had even moved him to the bullpen. In my opinion they should just move him and keep him there.
Sorry, Giants, but maybe we can just swallow the pride and have a $126 million reliever.
It's hard to put the blame on one person, but Zito seems to be building his own curse among the team. In the three-game series with the Brewers, the defense clicked.
The bullpen were able to step in and either seal the win or stop the bleeding. But when Zito is on the mound, they might as well play on their knees.
The errors where horrible, the fundamentals weren't there. Was it that they just accepted the lost because Zito was standing on the hill?
I'm sorry Giants fans, but its time to realize Zito is a $126 million T-ball stand for San Francisco's opponents.
