Last year I got into a debate with a couple of guys from work. The night before, I had just watched the end of a Cubs game and witnessed one of the lamest things I had ever seen/heard.
The Cubbies had just pulled off a victory and I started to hear 1970s folk music playing. I literally thought there was an audio problem with the broadcast. I realized pretty quickly that it wasn't a mistake, and the annoying sound was coming from Wrigley Field.
I remembered thinking, what is the Cubs marketing staff thinking? No way will the fans enjoy that. Much to my amazement, no one was leaving the ball park. They actually started singing along.
The next day I immediately questioned the Cubs fans I work with. How long has this been going on? People don't seriously like that song do they?
My colleagues literally laughed me out of the office. Apparently singing this song at Wrigley Field was some sort of tradition. I, of course, continued to rib them on how horribly cheesy the song was. This prompted several derogatory statements directed towards the New York Mets.
For those of you who haven't heard this complete rip off of Barney's "I Love You, You Love Me," here you go.
My co-workers challenged me on the fact that the Mets didn't even have a song. They had a point...to an extent. The Mets had a much better song. The problem was, they stopped playing it over 20 years ago.
I came back to the office the next day with a clearly better version of a team song.
You be the judge.
The winner is clear—'80s hair band rock over '70s folk music any day.
Now if I can just convince the powers to be at Citi Field to bring back this anthem.
