According to a report published by the AP, Hideki Matsui is not likely to play in the outfield at all at least until interleague play in June, when the Yankees will be without a DH for the first time.
“The earliest we would need him in the outfield would be interleague, and that’s a ways off,” Girardi said Wednesday. “That’s why we envision him as our everyday DH. We need him. He’s a great RBI guy. He’s very important to our lineup.”
“I think the fact my body, knee are getting used to it is a good sign,” Matsui said through a translator.
This news is not exactly unexpected, but it’s not something I expected Joe Girardi to come out with like that. It’s possible that he could get quite a bit of rest the first half of the season if the Yankees decide to use Jorge Posada as the team’s DH to rest his shoulder coming off surgery.
