How Excited Is Too Excited About The White Sox?

After game one of 162, the White Sox couldn’t look better.

Buehrle and the 'pen made the Cleveland Indians look like, well, the Cleveland Indians.

The lineup showed a perfect combination of power and speed.

And last, but not least, Ozzie made it through one game without starting Omar Vizquel. Kudos all the way around.

The question that comes to mind now is, how excited should we as White Sox fans be about the season?

We knew before yesterday that the pitching staff would likely be in the top five in the American League, but now we’ve gotten a glimpse of what the lineup could be.

I’ve been outspoken about my worry about the lack of power in the lineup, but the way the lineup performed on opening day has me starting to trust what Ozzie has planned—working the count, taking the extra base when a pitch is in the dirt, and of course the occasional long ball.

So back to the original question: How excited should Sox fans be about the season now? If all of a sudden they have a lineup to go with that talented pitching staff, is a division title likely and a run in the playoffs possible?

The logical answer to that question is...it’s too soon to tell.

One game is just that—one game. A week from now there will be new concerns about the team as well as new things to get excited about.

The fan in me, however, wants to start getting excited right now about what this season may have in store.

For now, logic will win out, and I’ll continue to fret about the lineup and bemoan the fact that there’s not enough home run power in the lineup.

But a few more games like yesterday's and I won’t be able to contain the fan part of my brain that wants to already get in line for playoff tickets.
