It's time for the Mets to take very drastic measures in fixing their bullpen. Get rid of it! Keep JJ Putz and Fransisco Rodriguez and dump the rest. Forget the righty, lefty match-ups and dump them all.
Think I am crazy don't you? Just wait, it gets better.
Instead of five starters, the two backups in the minors that usually are called up, just have nine to ten starters on the team. That way, you have eleven pitchers, nine of them starters and two of them closers.
Just follow.
No matter who puts on a Mets jersey, they ten to blow the game, whether it is the fifth inning or the ninth inning, they are doomed to blow it, it has become faith. Whenever the starting pitcher has a lead, and hands the ball off to the bullpen, he will not get the win.
So here it is, have nine starters and two closers, and play every game like it is a double header. What? That is right, unless the pitchers name is Johan Santana, you know that the starter is only going five to six innings, so let's just make it a max of five innings.
So say John Maine is on the mound, usually pitches great for the first four innings, then starts to blow it, so here is what you do, have Maine pitch four innings. Then bring in JJ Putz to save the game in the fifth. Then, from the sixth through till the eighth, have Oliver Perez take the ball, with K-rod closing it in the ninth.
Just think of it, it has never been done, it is a horrible idea, but heck, with the Mets bullpen, and the weak stamina of their starting pitching, this might even work. And the best part about it is if the Mets are ahead after the fifth, but then blow it later, they can say, "well hey, at least we got the first game."
It is a win-win.
As you can see, I am just joking and responding to all the negativity from Met fans toward their bullpen. Yes they have blown two games in a row, but let's wait and see. It is only April, can we give the bullpen till at least June to see how guys are throwing and fitting in.
This team has a lot of problems going on, but maybe that's what they need, to start off slow, to start off like they are stuck in mud, drowning in the water, maybe its actually good for them. Maybe being down five games come September could actually wake this team up.
You never know, but it is very early, lets wait and see in June and July where this team will actually be and how they are performing. Who knows, they might surprise all of us and actually turn it on. Or they might turn it on and do what they have been accustomed to do, choke it in September.
They play 162 for a reason.
