Red Sox minor league pitcher Junichi Tazawa visited Birmingham, AL, to consult with orthopedist James Andrews this afternoon. As of the posting of this article, neither the player nor the team had received the results of the exam—or at least not that they have made public.
The right-hander started experiencing discomfort in his right elbow late last season. During the course of spring training there were times when he has felt fine, but there were other times that things didn’t seem quite right. His performance was somtimes missing something—whether it was lack of command or the lack of action on his pitches.
According to pitching coach John Farrell, Tazawa and the club mapped out his workload to provide him with ample time to recover. When things didn’t progress as hoped, the coach said: “It got to the point where we needed to take a further look and get an in-depth evaluation.”
Tazawa last pitched in an exhibition game a week ago, and he has not thrown at all over the last few days.
