Jason Gentile: Baseball's Hidden High School Talent

Jason Gentile is like many high school students in the United States. He plays video games, religiously follows the Mets, and enjoys spending time with his family.

But unlike most kids, Jason can launch 500-foot-plus home runs.

The 5’10” shortstop from Stamford, Connecticut is a hidden gem in high school baseball prospects.

The All-American Gentile, who attends Westhill High School, made the USA Under-18 Team, has won a golden glove and slugger award, and has established some impressive numbers, throwing third to first at 86 mph, a 6.7 60-yard dash, a tier 7 ranking, a solid infield defense, and an impressive 506-foot home run on record.

Numbers don’t fully describe Gentile’s drive and ambition. Jason is a very outgoing 16-year-old, often taking the initiative to personally contact scouts, media, and baseball fans alike to promote his incredible talent—all to realize his lifelong goal of entering the 2011 MLB draft.

The drive to play for a major league team, innate in Gentile, has taken on fervor over the last year since the passing of both of his grandparents.

“Everything I accomplish will be for them because they didn’t have the chance to see [me succeed] which motivates me so much more.”

With the spring season approaching, Jason will have more opportunities coming to potentially woo MLB scouts and increasingly more important mock draft and prospect ranking websites. But for now, Gentile will be focusing on playing his best and hoping someone out there helps him get to the next level.
