According to the Milwaukee Sentinel, the Toronto Blue Jays have traded No. 1 pitcher and staff ace Shaun Marcum to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for prospects, none of which have been confirmed by any sources.
Some reports have the Jays acquiring middle infielder and Canadian Brett Lawrie as part of the package, but details aren't spilling out. Other reports I'm hearing are its for third baseman Mat Gamel, but again, these are early reports.
Some more recent reports say the Jays will only get minor-league pitching prospects and nothing more. So really, until details are given out, its all speculation on our part.
Marcum went 13-8 last season with a 3.64 ERA and 161 strikeouts while Lawrie, while in Double A Hunstville, hit .285 with eight home runs in 135 games.
This move looks to be a pre-cursor to a few larger moves the Jays may have up their sleeve in an attempt to acquire more talent to help bolster an already potent lineup.
There is word the Jays were looking to make a move for Zack Greinke. Could this move help lead the way for a Greinke to Toronto swap?
The Jays appear to be keeping their promise of trading to try and acquire talent going forward. Unfortunately, right now it looks like the Jays traded their staff ace, who pitched very well in the AL East, for a pair of prospects, who by all accounts haven't proven anything yet.
I'm going to take a wait and see approach before thoroughly dissecting this deal.
UPDATE:
According to sources in Toronto, the Jays have traded Marcum for Canadian Brett Lawrie and 20-year old right hander Nick Bucci.
