Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez suffered a non-displaced fracture to his right elbow in June and is set to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday, per Katie Strang of ESPN.com.

Strang noted the outfielder will play for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens during his rehab and ease his way back into the outfield by beginning as the designated hitter.

When healthy, Martinez has remained a rock-solid power bat who has helped ignite the team's offense. To date, Martinez has batted .286 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI while recording an on-base percentage of .358 in 65 games this season.

Those numbers have come on the heels of Martinez's career year. Over the course of a healthy 2015 campaign that saw him appear in 158 games, the six-year veteran tallied 38 home runs and 102 RBI en route to earning a Silver Slugger Award.

Should the power-packed Martinez suffer any type of setback, the Tigers will likely turn to Mike Aviles or Tyler Collins to fill the void.
