Jean Segura Injury: Updates on Brewers SS's Head After Being Hit With Bat

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura suffered a freak injury on Saturday night, getting hit in the face by Ryan Braun in the team's dugout.

Cubs broadcaster Len Kasper reported that Braun was stretching and swinging his bat around when he connected with Segura:

The Brewers announced good news after the game:

However, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Tom Haudricourt noted that Segura will need plastic surgery:

Rotoworld.com's Matthew Pouliot thought Segura was hit near the right eye:

Haudricourt noted what the injury looked like:

You can see video of the injury below.

A breakout star in 2013, Segura has so far failed to build upon his All-Star success of last season. Coming into Saturday, Segura had a slash line of .239/.272/.330, down from .294/.329/.423 last year.

Despite his early-season struggles at the plate, losing Segura for an extended period of time would be a big blow to the Brewers. Jeff Bianchi replaced Segura on Saturday. A career .224 hitter, Bianchi isn't what you'd consider an optimal backup plan.

The Brewers have been one of the biggest surprises in baseball this season, jumping out to a league-best 17-6 record and a five-game lead in the National League Central. Without Segura in the lineup, Milwaukee may watch as that hot start slowly evaporates.
