In the second edition of the Jordan Schafer PlayerCast, I will profile the three-game series against the St Louis Cardinals.
I will include pivitol at bats (runners on, leading off, etc.) and his statline for the series.
Statlines will be AB/H/BB/K/R/RBI/SB/pitches seen.
Game One (4/27/2009)
(batting eighth)
Second Inning vs. Piniero: Jordan Schafer came to the plate with David Ross on second and two outs. In this clutch situation, he flied out to center after an 0-2 count. Not a productive at-bat.
Third Inning on defense: Schafer made an over-the-head double-saving grab. Although it didn't get much press, it was a very impressive play with Schaf running at a full clip.
Eighth Inning vs McClellan: Leading off, the Braves' center fielder scorched a single to right. He then advanced to third on Norton and Chipper walks (two outs were made in the process) before being stranded on a Casey Kotchman flyout.
Final Line: 3/1/0/0/0/0/0/9.
L, 2-3
WP: Piniero

S: Franklin
Game Two (4/28/2009)
(batting seventh)
8th Inning vs.Reyes: Coming up with runners on first and third after a Matt Diaz 85-hopper that plated two, Schafer came up to face Dennys Reyes. He struck out on four pitches.
However, in non-pivitol situations, he did well (see directly below).
Final Line: 3/2/1/1/0/0/0/18
W, 2-1
WP: Moylan
LP: McClellan
S: Gonzalez
Game Three (4/29/2009)
(batting seventh)
Third Inning vs. Wainwright: Schafer came up with Jeff Francoeur on third and two out, but didn't have to worry about that after Francoeur scored on a wild pitch. He then had an eight-pitch at-bat before drawing a walk.
Schaf then stole his first major league bag off Yadier Molina before being stranded on a David Ross flyout.
Fifth Inning vs. Wainwright: In a 3-5 game, the Braves' center fielder came up with runners on first and second, and, after a six-pitch at-bat, walked again. Ross Kd in the next at-bat, leaving the bases loaded.
Although you would like to see more hitting, you have to love the patience from a rookie.
Final Line: 1/0/3/0/0/0/1/19
L, 5-3
WP: Wainwright
LP: Vazquez
S: Franklin
Overall, this was a good series for Jordan. He saw an average of thirteen pitches per game and walked a total of four times.
He is showing development as a player (patience is, after all, a virtue), and it still looks like trading away Josh Anderson was the right move.
Overall Line: 7/3/4/1/0/0/1/46
