The Mets had a dreadful 2009 as a team. Many players got injured and some just didn't perform up to par. The New York Mets' shortstop, Jose Reyes, suffered a hamstring injury 36 games into the season.
It seemed like it was only a minor injury, and that Reyes would be back on the field the next day. That was not the case; Reyes would be sidelined for the rest of the 2009 season.
He described the injury as extremely painful. When his hamstring started to feel better, he would jog, and just jogging alone would result in a large amount of pain.
Reyes tried so hard to get back to his team, but setback after setback prevented that from happening. The team began to see the effect of not having their regular leadoff hitter taking the field every day, along with missing many other key players.
The Mets managed to stay alive until the All-Star break. After the All-Star break it seemed like everything went downhill for the New York Mets. They were quickly eliminated from contention, and they ended the season with over 90 losses.
The Mets' organization came into this offseason looking to fill many holes. As of now, none of those holes are filled. It seems that every team but the Mets are making moves to improve their team.
The Mets are trying though, they are talking to most of the players that they're interested in, and they seem to be making some progress.
The Mets biggest move this off season so far isn't a big signing or a big trade, it is actually a simple interview. An interview that cleared up a lot of things.
The interview was between WFAN's Mike Francesa and the New York Mets' shortstop, Jose Reyes. There was talk going around that this interview would be coming sooner rather than later.
The news of the interview turned many Mets' fans frowns upside down. This was an opportunity for the Mets and Jose Reyes to give their fan base something to be happy about. It also cleared up a load of things about Jose Reyes.
On Wednesday, Mike Francesa had a sit down with Jose Reyes. Jose desperately needed a chance to clear up many things to his fans.
It seemed that Reyes' main objective of the interview was to get the point across that he loves the game of baseball and wanted to play every game last season.
That couldn't happen because his injury made it impossible for him to make an effective comeback. He had no choice but to go through surgery. Reyes went on to say that he believed that having surgery was the best decision he ever made.
He made it clear that he feels 100 percent and that he feels that he will come back as the same player as he was before. He also believes that his best years are ahead of him, and that he is continuing to get better in every aspect of the game.
Jose also showed that he is a mature player, but can also be playful guy in the clubhouse. When Reyes was asked about his hand shakes and celebrations, he said that he would not stop them because that is part of the person that he is and will not change regardless of complaints.
He also made it clear that when his team loses, he gets angry. He said that he doesn't even talk to anybody after a loss. He only laughs and jokes around when his team is winning games.
It was obvious that Mike Francesa was trying to push Jose Reyes into aggravating the Phillies and their fans. Francesa brought up numerous situations between the Mets and Phillies, hoping that Reyes would crack and make huge story lines.
Thankfully, that wasn't the case, but when Reyes was asked if he thinks that he is better than Jimmy Rollins it was obvious that he was biting his tongue not to say that he is the better shortstop.
Instead of saying that he is better than Rollins in every aspect of the game, he simply said that he doesn't know who is better.
I am really happy that Jose kept everything that he wanted to say bottled in that shows that he is a mature young player that all Mets fans love.
Jose also said that he does not get mad when fans boo him or get aggravated with him. He believes that it is good and that we let him know that he has to perform a little better.
He loves playing in New York, and loves the Mets. He mentioned that he wanted to come back and play the last three games of the season, we know that didn't work out. But, that shows us fans that he really wanted to be on the field.
Jose believes that if you play hard and well in New York, the fans will love you. He is right, but Mets fans always love him no matter what happens.
He ended the interview, by saying that he is 100 percent and will be the same player that he was before his hamstring injury. When he was asked if he had a message to the fans, he simply said "Stay calm, we'll be fine."
