Jose Reyes has sat out the last five games and is not showing any true signs of either coming back to the lineup or going on the disabled list to let his leg heal properly.
The Mets have been enduring an incredible amount of injury news of late, mostly the news of Carlos Delgado requiring hip surgery which will sideline him for approximately ten weeks.
Injuries do occur during the season, and no player wants to sit on the sidelines, but how these injuries are handled by the team can make or break a player and his season and in some cases, his career.
Last season, Ryan Church and his concussions were not handled properly, even though the symptoms do not appear consistently, he should not have flown back and forth across the country.
Jose Reyes said that he had pain on Wednesday but played through it during the day game against Atlanta.
On Thursday evening, we hear that Reyes is complaining about calf pain which had started on Wednesday, but was made worse during the cross country flight to San Francisco.
Tests have been performed by San Francisco and Los Angeles medical personnel and he does have swelling in his leg which was characterized as tendinitis.
As a speedster, Reyes needs his legs working properly in order to help the Mets on an everyday basis.
Once Reyes was not able to play after sitting out Thursday and Friday night, he should have gone back to New York for the Mets team physicians to examine him and take the appropriate measures.
Reyes said last night that he will get to the stadium early today to see how his running is and will then determine his readiness to play.
If he cannot play tonight, he should be put on the disabled list and make it retroactive to Saturday as his last appearance was on Friday as a pinch hitter.
