In order to provide some insurance in the infield, the Mets have signed veteran infielder Junior Spivey to a minor-league deal today.
The 34-year-old Spivey hasn’t played in a major league game since 2005 with the Washington Nationals, where he hit for an unimpressive .232 batting average.
This move isn’t really significant at the moment, as there isn’t any room for Spivey on the major league roster. This move could become significant down the road if there is an injury to one of the Mets infielders.
More likely than not, though, GM Omar Minaya is just filling roster space for the team’s Triple-A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons.
