Just Another Week In The Bizarre World Of The New York Mets

And the debacle continues.

It was confirmed yesterday that Jose Reyes will be out for two to eight weeks with what the Mets are describing as a “hyperthyroid.”

Ok, fair enough.  No one wants to mess around with a thyroid problem.

The issue here is not Reyes’ ailment, but the way in which the Mets have yet again brought their fans on a bizarre seesaw ride over the past week and we are still left asking what in the world is going on with Jose Reyes.

Word began to leak out late last week that Reyes was scratched from the lineup of a pre-season game due to some abnormal blood tests results.

Shortly thereafter, it became known that the issue at hand was Reyes’ thyroid gland.

Ok, so the Mets could have been more transparent with this issue but they wanted to confirm the blood test results before starting to toss around words like “thyroid” and “problem.”

Now, this is when things really begin to turn bizarre.

A day after the Mets’ doctors discovered Reyes’ thyroid problem, they cleared him to play.

Ok, we can all take a deep breath. All is once again good in the world of Jose Reyes.

Then, not even 24 hours later, Omar Minaya and the Mets’ medical staff decided that yes, there actually was a problem and that they would be sending Reyes back to New York to undergo an extensive series of tests on his thyroid gland.

Well, a little bit strange, but then again, this is the Mets we are talking about here.

So, a scared and confused Reyes was flown to New York for additional tests on what they were at the time describing as “elevated thyroid levels.”

Reyes was run through a series of tests in New York before appearing on ESPN Deportes on Tuesday night where he said "The specialists who took care of me in New York have told me that I'm fine, and that there's nothing wrong with my thyroid. The test showed that I'm fine."

Great news!  After a week-long scare its official, we will have our all-star shortstop on the field on opening day.

Or maybe not.

The seesaw would swing yet again on Thursday.

Less than 48 hours after Reyes told the world that he is perfectly healthy and the doctors said he was good to go, the Mets announced that he would be out for two to eight weeks with a “hyperthyroid.”

Reyes’ course of treatment?

Rest and dietary changes.

Huh?

Our high-paid all-star shortstop who claims that the doctors in New York said he was absolutely fine is now being placed on the DL in order to rest and change his diet?

What was this guy eating before?

Lead with some asbestos sprinkled on top as a condiment?

So now both Reyes and Carlos Beltran will likely be absent from the Mets’ opening day lineup due to what can only be described as head-scratchingly bizarre medical ailments that may or may not have been properly treated by the medical staff of one the of the wealthiest franchises in baseball.

Ahh, just another week in the world of the New York Mets.
