Ken Macha To Be Fired as Milwaukee Brewers Manager

According to sources from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Ken Macha has managed his last game for the Milwaukee Brewers. His option for 2011 will not be picked up, and he'll be relieved of his duties on Monday.

Macha has managed the Brewers to back-to-back losing seasons after the team made the playoffs in 2008.

The team finished 80-82 in his first season as skipper, but followed that up with a disappointing record of 77-85 this season, good enough for third in the NL Central.

The Brewers season, and perhaps Macha's fate, was sealed when the team went on a nine-game losing streak in May.

Although the Brewers had an above-average offense, the pitching kept the team on the losing end of things for most of the year.

Neither Macha nor new pitching coach Rick Peterson could offset the injuries and ineffectiveness of both the starters and relievers in 2010.

Rumors circulated early in September that the Brewers could seek Bob Melvin to replace Macha as manager.

Melvin had been a candidate for the position before, and he was bench coach in Milwaukee for former manager Phil Garner. He previously managed in both Seattle and Arizona.

The Brewers also have two internal candidates for the opening in Willie Randolph and Dale Sveum.

Randolph last managed the Mets, while Sveum managed the Brewers to the playoffs over the final 12 games of the 2008 season. However, each man was already passed over by Doug Melvin when Macha was hired.

Whether it be Bob Melvin or another candidate, expect the Brewers to act relatively quickly in their search.

Several jobs are expected to become available and owner Mark Attanasio will no doubt want to hire a new skipper as soon as possible.
