Kike Hernandez Injury: Updates on Dodgers OF's Hamstring and Return

Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Kike Hernandez has had a rough couple of days. On Sunday night, he and his Dodgers teammates were no-hit by Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta. On Monday, the 24-year-old landed on the 15-day disabled list.

Austin Barnes to Take Hernandez's Spot on Roster

Monday, Aug. 31

The Dodgers announced Monday that Hernandez is suffering from a left hamstring strain, thus necessitating a trip to the DL, and that Austin Barnes will take his spot on the roster.

According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, he suffered the injury as he was running to first base in the eighth inning Sunday night.

"I've never had any hamstring issues before, so I really don't even know what I felt," Hernandez said after the game. "Just wake up tomorrow and see how it feels."

In 201 plate appearances this year, Hernandez is batting .308 with a .492 slugging percentage. He has hit six home runs and driven in 21 runs.

Hernandez will be tough to replace since he can fill such a wide variety of roles from one game to the next; he has played six different positions for Los Angeles this season, spending the majority of his time at second base, shortstop and in the outfield.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal posited earlier in the night that the Dodgers could look to add Boston Red Sox outfielder Alejandro De Aza in the event that they'd be without Hernandez for an extended period of time. Perhaps the team will pull the trigger on another deal—be it for De Aza or any other veteran—to compensate for Hernandez's absence.
