This morning I was talking to a friend of mine about the Mets first base situation.
With Delgado on the disabled list, he was saying the Mets should try to get Mark DeRosa to take his place.
Not a bad idea, but what's wrong with Fernando Tatis and Daniel Murphy?
If you look at the numbers, both Murphy and Tatis are having better seasons than DeRosa.
But this goes beyond the numbers.
Mark DeRosa is a nice player, and I would like to have him on my team.
But he isn't on my team and I'm not about to go out of my way to get him. And I'm certainly not about to give up any prospects for him.
If Cleveland wants to do us a favor and hand him over for next to nothing, I have no problem with that. But I am perfectly satisfied with the team as it is.
Tatis is a good power bat that can play anywhere on the diamond, and has played everywhere this year.
Murphy is in a slump right now. But his patience at the plate and his willingness to hit to the opposite field make me confident that it is only a temporary slump like everyone goes through from time to time.
So the question is what does DeRosa bring us that we don't already have?
The answer is nothing.
If a trade were to be made for DeRosa, the purpose would be just to make a trade. DeRosa doesn't address any needs that we can't address with the players that we already have.
Besides, bad trades aren't supposed to be made until the trade deadline.
