The Los Angeles Dodgers executed a trade Monday to bring in coveted minor league prospect Kyle Jensen from the Miami Marlins organization.
Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reported the news:
The Marlins would later confirm the news:
As a member of the Triple-A New Orleans Zephyrs this season, Jensen participated in 133 games, hitting 27 home runs and 92 RBI, per Baseball-Reference.com. Although the 26-year-old has considerable power, he also is aggressive to a fault at times, evident in his 147 strikeouts.
There is no denying Jensen has tremendous upside, though. Developing a bit more patience at the plate will go a long way in determining how great Jensen can become for L.A.
Jensen has been accustomed to playing in the outfield, but if he's meant to contribute to the Dodgers in the near future, that doesn't seem like a viable place to go. Between Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford and even Andre Ethier and Joc Pederson, there is little room for Jensen to plug in.
However, this report from Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal makes the situation a bit clearer:
First base seems like the best possible spot for Jensen on the depth chart as it stands, yet he'll be behind All-Star Adrian Gonzalez, who is an established power hitter himself.
While the Dodgers do add an intriguing talent in Jensen to the fold with this trade, it's unclear as to what his role will be for the foreseeable future due to the club's current personnel.
