Ex-Nats Skipper Could Help Mets Get Back On Track
The Washington Nationals fired their manager, Manny Acta, today, opening the door for the NY Mets to bring their former third-base coach back into the fold.
Why would the Mets - who are struggling mightily to stay afloat - want to bring in a manager who had won only 26 games in the first half this season?
The answer is, because had he not taken the Washington job in 2007, he would have been named the Mets manager when Willie Randolph was released last June. Instead, the Mets had to turn to Jerry 'The Gangsta' Manuel and his unusual and inexplicable style.
Let's face it, no manager could win with the Washington Nationals. They don't have a stitch of pitching and they make errors by the boatload. Acta should be actually thankful for his release.
The Mets would do several things by adding Acta to their staff. He is highly regarded throughout the international baseball community and is known for his solid rapport with players. During his tenure here he was well liked and respected by everyone from the hot dog vendors on up.
Right now, under the likes of Manuel, Sandy Alomar, Howard Johnson and Razor Shines the Mets are like chickens without heads. It is apparent that the team is not responding to them. Acta injects some stability back into the coaching ranks.
The Mets should act quickly before he ends up in Florida or some other place.
