Well the non-tender deadline has come and gone, and the Mets made a few interesting decisions regarding the future of some of the players that were on the roster last year. This team is going to have a very different look this year, and that is something that definitely needed to be done.
First of all, there were some expected non-tenders that the Mets announced, which includes guys like Lance Broadway and Jeremy Reed. Broadway was acquired for Ramon Castro early last season, and he only appeared with the big club when the season was lost. We certainly give our regards to Broadway before he leaves.
Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.
Then there was Reed, who was acquired as part of the big J.J. Putz deal last off season. That deal obviously didn’t pan out in the Mets’ favor, as they decided to non-tender Reed and let Putz sign with the White Sox. Reed is replaceable, and I am far from heartbroken to see him go.
Some people thought Tim Redding would be brought back after his solid finish, but I never liked the guy. He pitched well when there was no pressure. That seems like his thing. He had a good year in Washington, and the Mets thought he could be a good back of the rotation type, but it didn’t really work out.
One guy I would have liked to see back next year is Cory Sullivan. I thought he played well in his limited time with the club. He can hit from gap to gap, and his defense was certainly adequate. I think the Mets are showing loud and clear that this means they hope that Angel Pagan can fill the Endy role. We’ll see.
There were a few interesting guys around baseball who were handed their walking papers, and I am sure Omar Minaya is already investigating his options. How about Mark DiFelice to be added to the bullpen? The Brewers decided not to bring him back, despite the fact that he had a 3.66 ERA in 2009 and a 2.84 ERA in 2008. I say bring him aboard.
I have mentioned it before and I will do so again. I like Ryan Garko to be a B-Plan option for the bench and to give Murphy some time off here and there. Although he is coming off of a rather sub par season, he can still hit lefties, and that would be his primary role if he is brought in. This guy has Mets written all over him. He probably would come cheap, and he could be a nice story if he produces.
Another guy I like is Matt Capps. The Pirates surprised a lot of people by non-tendering one of their best players. Does anything they do make sense anymore? I am surprised that they are bringing Andrew McCutchen back.
Capps is coming off a bit of a tough year where he had a 5.80 ERA, but he did rack up a career-best 27 saves. He could be Putz’ replacement, and maybe the fact that he would be in a less-pressure situation could work out for him.
What do you think? Who should the Mets explore?
