According to Mike Puma of the NY Post, Mets Minor League left-handed pitcher Angel Calero has been suspended for 50 games after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.
Calero, 23, has started the season in Single-A St. Lucie after he pitched there all of last season and part of 2008. So his career could be classified as “stalled” right now. Last year he started 22 games, throwing 107.1 innings with a 3-11 record and a 4.61 ERA.
He was moved to the bullpen this year, and has not had success so far. In four games, he has a 5.68 ERA and has walked more batters than he’s thrown innings (7 walks in 6.1 innings pitched).
So, it’s not exactly hard to see why this kid turned to the juice. He isn’t exactly a highly touted prospect. Still, it’s a shame to see something like this happen to any player.
