Mets-Phillies: David Wright Provides One of the Best Moments of the Season

Yesterday, the Mets were down one run going into the ninth inning.  They were even down to their final out of the game.  All signs pointed to another loss to the Phillies.  Their fifth loss in a row.

Then David Wright came up to bat with a man on, and delivered what could be one of the best wins of the season, belting a two-run, go-ahead home run into the left field stands to put the Mets ahead.

The beginning of the game did not go as well as the end.

The Mets gave starter Mike Pelfrey a four-run lead in the first inning.  Stringing together hit after hit to plate the four runs before Omir Santos ended the rally with a double play for the first two outs of the game.

Pelfrey, as is becoming the norm, was unable to hold the early lead, giving up six runs by the fourth inning.  Pelfrey’s starts are becoming predictably bad, and it’s time for the Mets to realize he’s not the pitcher they thought he was.

Back to the good news.

The Mets put together six runs in the last three innings of the game to come back and beat the team that I enjoy the Mets beating more than anyone else.  This game, and this series, was expected to mean a lot more than it actually does, and it’s important for the Mets to get some wins.

Getting some of the losing taste out of their mouths for the last 20 games of the year will help going into spring training and 2010.

Quality wins like yesterday’s will go a long way toward rebuilding the winning attitude that will be necessary to succeed in what is turning out to be an extremely competitive division.

John Maine makes his “triumphant” return today, as he matches up against former Met Pedro Martinez.  It should be an interesting game to say the least.
