Miguel Cabrera Injury: Updates on Tigers Star's Leg and Return

Cabrera Out Six Weeks; No Surgery Needed

Saturday, July 4

Manager Brad Ausmus said Cabrera suffered a Grade 3 calf strain, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com. Catherine Slonksnis of MLB.com noted the slugger had some fibers tearing in his calf but won't need surgery.

Ausmus also told reporters that designated hitter Victor Martinez would not be an option to replace Cabrera at first base, per Beck. "I would be concerned about putting Victor at 1st and losing him for an extended time," Ausmus said.

The Tigers called up third baseman Jefry Marte to replace Cabrera on the roster.

ESPN.com noted this is the first disabled list stint of his career.

Cabrera has been tremendously durable since making his MLB debut in 2003. The two-time American League MVP has never played less than 148 games in his 12 full seasons.

The Tigers have been hovering around .500 lately, entering play Friday at 39-39, so seeing Cabrera limp off the field isn't what this team needs as it moves into the All-Star break next weekend. Their offense depends heavily on having him on the field, and it will be nearly impossible for them to replace his production.
