MLB 2010: Why the New York Mets Are in Desperate Need of a Hot Start

For any baseball fan, there is no better time of year. The sun has finally broke through, spring training is in its final days, and it's time to play ball.

This Sunday will mark the beginning of the 2010 season as the Yankees and Red Sox start off their season at Fenway Park. This matchup should be a great prelude to what will be another great season of baseball.

However for one team, there is a reason to be nervous. The Mets, who finished an abysmal 70-92 just a season ago, will have to come back with a much better performance if they want to get back to their elite status of the 2006 season.

With some injured players, a manager on the hot-seat and a questionable general manager, the Mets are in danger of spiraling into a very bad situation.

Usually baseball in April means a new beginning, a chance to have a good season, a time to just go out there and enjoy it. For this franchise, they will need a great start in order to put to rest the questions of the job statuses of their two most important employees.

This will be hard seeing, as star center fielder Carlos Beltran will be out for over a month, and starting pitcher John Maine, and shortstop Jose Reyes are never sure things.

In fact, nothing is really a sure thing anymore. Johan Santana isn't the same pitcher that he was with the Twins.

David Wright is in an identity crisis, trying to become the power hitter he was two years ago.

Jose Reyes is trying to go two weeks without making major headlines for some medical situation.

Jerry Manuel is just trying to keep his seat in the dugout. And although the team is carrying about six catchers, none of them are A+, Major League material.

The question is, will the Mets be able to get this monkey off their back and get back to their winning ways, or will Mets fans have to return to misery?

Teams like Yankees and the Red Sox will have good seasons, and teams like the Orioles and Nationals probably won't. For teams like the Mets, everything is up in the air.

They play in a division that doesn't sport an unbeatable team, nor does it have a team that will be out of the running by June. There are no guaruntee's come April. Nothing is set.

Just cross your fingers and hope for the best.
