After the Seattle Mariners lost to the Kansas City Royals today, 7-0, Eric Wedge held a closed door meeting and ripped into his team like no other, according to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times.
The loss dropped the Mariners to 4-11 on the season.
I watched a good portion of this game and I must admit, the Mariners looked sloppy and lifeless. What I am guessing really set Wedge off was the fact that the Mariners looked sloppy and lifeless behind Felix Hernandez.
I think one of the great talents in the game has earned the right and, more importantly, the respect, to have the players behind him be on top of their game for nine innings.
Wedge wouldn’t reveal exactly what was said behind closed doors, but did say this to Baker:
“Yeah, I had a few choice words for them. I’m not real happy right now. I made it real clear how we’re going to go about our business here.”
Whether or not these “closed door” or “player only” meetings have any effect on a team’s performance is up for debate. I have never sat through one of these in a professional setting, so I couldn’t tell you if they work or not.
I mean, New York Mets’ manager Terry Collins had a closed door meeting with his players in between games of a double header, and the Mets proceeded to play their worst game of the year in game two.
Does that mean the Mets don’t respect Collins and whatever he says goes in one ear and out the other? No, it doesn’t. The Mets are just a bad team.
And that is what the Mariners are—a bad team. I personally think that no amount of screaming Wedge does this year will help the Mariners.
It’s going to be a long year in Seattle.
