Luis Castillo Arrives Late to Philadelphia Phillies Camp
Let's say you're someone who just got released from a baseball team. More accurately, a team essentially paid you $6 million to go away. A team is looking to fill the second base spot, and sign you.
You'd actually make sure you were there on time right? Luis Castillo did not. After signing with the Phillies on Sunday, he was expected to arrive in Clearwater on Monday, but did not show up until Tuesday afternoon, citing a miscommunication.
Castillo will now play his first game for the Phillies today, and now has only a week to prove that he can be the starting second baseman for the Phillies, at least until Chase Utley is healthy again. After that, we'll see what happens with him.
Despite all the problems he's had with the Mets, all that the Phillies and Castillo are concerned about is how well he does in Philly. While arriving late doesn't exactly help, he at least has the ability to win the second base job if he can harness his abilities and not make senseless errors in the field.
Ruben Amaro says Castillo's late arrival doesn't hurt his chances of making the team or winning the starting job, but you have to think that this is at the back of everyone's minds in Philly. Then again, what's done is done, all Castillo can do now is actually play well in the final Spring Training games.
