First base is a power position. First basemen such as, Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, Adrian Gonzalez, Mark Teixeira, and many more are among the top home run hitters in the league.
The Mets did not have much power last year. Albert Pujols singlehandily had more home runs than the whole Mets' team.
The Mets' new stadium, Citi Field was brought up by many as the reason why the Mets suffered this huge power outage in the 2009 season. I don't believe it is, because the Mets had one more home run at home then away this season.
It might've been because the Mets' biggest home run hitter, Carlos Delgado missed a huge chunk of the season. The Mets also suffered many lengthy injuries and some players just did not produce in the home run column.
Some people are in favor of the Mets trading for a power hitting first basemen, such as Adrian Gonzalez. I am not one of those people, I do not believe that the Mets desperately need a power hitting first basemen.
Of course, it would be nice, but it just doesn't make sense to me with the position that the Mets are in. They have plenty more dire needs than first base.
The Mets farm system isn't one of the best and a trade like this could totally drain it. I believe that the Mets should let go of Carlos Delgado. Carlos is one of my favorite players and I always wanted the best for him.
He is a great player and what counts more is that he is a great person. The Mets need to cut him loose though. His body is aging and getting more vulnerable to injuries every day.
I believe that the Mets already have their answer to first base next season. His name is Daniel "Irish Hammer" Murphy. Murphy showed a lot of progress at the end of the season.
He showed that he can be a guy who hits around .275 with at least 10-15 home runs in a season. I think that those numbers can help the Mets greatly. They don't need to send all their top prospects to the Padres for Adrian Gonzalez when they already have a solid first basemen.
Like I said earlier, the Mets have more important holes to fill then first base. They must be wise with money so they can spend it on a number two starting pitcher, left fielder, possibly a second baseman, and some other small parts.
To wrap it all up, I believe that the Mets 2010 first basemen should be Daniel Murphy. He is a solid player and he's only getting better. My next article will be on who I think should be at second base for the Mets come Opening Day of the 2010 season.
I hope you are enjoying my thoughts on how the 2010 New York Mets should look. All comments are appreciated and I would be more than happy to give you my insight on any of your thoughts.
