According to Peter Abraham of the Journal News, Xavier Nady’s elbow injury could mean the end of his Yankee career, as an MRI revealed a tear in his elbow and is likely to require surgery.
The Yankees have not made any announcements as they are seeking second and probably third opinions to see if rehab is possible.
If he does go under the knife, it is possible that his days in Pinstripes are done.
Nady will be a free agent after the season ends and has Scott Boras as an agent, which means he won’t be giving anybody any discounts just because of the little fact that he didn’t play an entire season.
It is possible, especially with Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui also set to be free agents, that Nady and the Yankees could agree on a one-year deal at the end of the season.
While they may not get a discount, it is possible longer contract offers may not come pouring in at the annual rate Boras typically expects for his players. In that case he may be agreeable to a one-year deal.
In the short term, the Yankees are going to plug Nick Swisher into the right field role. They also put Nady on the DL, which allowed the team to bring up David Robertson from the minors.
With Robertson, the Yankees have a crazy amount of relief pitchers on the team. Eventually, probably tonight or tomorrow, they are likely to send one back to the minors and call up a hitter, most likely Juan Miranda, who would serve as a bat off the bench and the backup first baseman.
