The New York Yankees and Miami Marlins completed a trade Friday that figures to strengthen the Bronx Bombers' questionable pitching and the Marlins' retooled lineup.
MLB Roster Moves announced the official deal:
Jack Curry of YES Network was the first to report.
New York needed another arm in its rotation after losing Brandon McCarthy in free agency, and the 24-year-old Eovaldi could be a good fit. Although he had his ups and downs in his first full season as a starter in 2014, Curry reports that he is a true power pitcher:
With that said, not everyone is convinced that Eovaldi was worth giving up a player like Prado. New York acquired the 31-year-old Prado in a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, and he hit .316 with seven home runs and 16 RBI in 37 games at third base and in the outfield.
John Schmeelk of WFAN 660 believes the Yanks made a mistake in keeping third baseman Chase Headley over Prado:
The New York Post's Joel Sherman is also apprehensive about the deal due to Prado's leadership:
The acquisition of the 33-year-old Jones could offset some of the offensive loss, as the lefty is coming off a 15-home run campaign. He is just a couple of years removed from hitting 27 home runs in a season, and his power should translate well to Yankee Stadium.
Phelps has been a useful utility pitcher for the Yanks over the past three seasons, but the 28-year-old righty was unlikely to earn a full-time spot in the rotation.
Ultimately, both teams involved in this deal addressed some needs as they attempt to get back to the playoffs.
They dealt from positions of strength, and it will be interesting to see which side benefits more in 2015 and beyond.
