Few teams in baseball enter the 2011 season with less hope than the New York Mets. From constant injury issues and disappointing play, to a rotation that is sure to struggle, to an ownership situation that is chaotic at best and downright toxic at worst, it's clear that the Mets are destined for another year near the cellar of the NL East.
But, that didn't stop Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane from rubbing a little bit more salt in the Citi Field faithful's wounds on one of the new episodes of his smash hit show.
In the episode, Stewie Griffin and Brian go trick-or-treating, with little success. Brian tries to cheer Stewie up, promising things will get better.
Stewie isn't convinced, telling Brian that right now, Halloween is "a bigger letdown than being a Mets fan."
We then cut to Stewie in the stands, where the announcer confirms just how hapless the Mets are, calling the season after the first pitch.
This isn't the first time MacFarlane has used digs about sports teams in his show, but he seems to have a particular hatred for the Mets.
However, it Mets fans might just wind up getting the last laugh. After all, the Mets are 2-1, beating the Marlins twice in three days. The Boston Red Sox (Peter Griffin's team of choice) are 0-3, and panic has begun to set in across Red Sox Nation.
In the end, though, something tells me it's going to be the Sox who wind up laughing all the way to their third World Series title in seven years.
