The Mets last played the Nationals on May 25. The Mets had just taken two of three from the Red Sox and were fresh off a tough 12-5 loss. When the Nationals rolled into town, the New York did exactly what was needed by sweeping the series with ease.
Now it’s time for the Mets to do the same in hostile territory. It isn’t going to be easy with so many injuries piling up, but this is going to be a true test to see what the Mets are made of.
J.J. Putz is the latest Met go down with an injury. On Tuesday, he will have surgery to remove bone spurs from his elbow, and he's expected to miss at least three months. It was nice knowing you, J.J.
There are several people who need to step up. One of them—a man who people often criticize me for being too hard on—is David Wright.
We have watched as Wright looked foolish at the plate for the last few games. If a pitcher throws a slider low and away to him, he often pulls his head off and swings and misses.
We need someone to tell him that he needs to always have the approach to go the other way. The homers will come soon, but the Mets need him to drive the ball to the gaps.
Daniel Murphy needs to step it up as well. He has looked overmatched recently, and there has even been some talk of a demotion. Personally, I think that’s nothing more than a scare tactic because the Mets simply don’t have the depth to make such a move.
The Mets need to get on a roll. There is no other way around it. Remember, YA GOTTA BELIEVE!
