As if the Mets didn't have enough problems, now talking babies are giving them grief.
This is a perfect case of people being split down the center on the issue and there not being much room for middle ground.
It all went down during the Mets' Opening Day loss to the Florida Marlins. As the opening day loss was being broadcast live on the Mets' home station of SNY, an unnamed employee of the station briefly played a Family Guy joke live over broadcaster Gary Cohen.
The joke in question is nothing new as it aired during the previous Family Guy season but it goes like this:
Stewie Griffin, the Fox show's want-to-be super villain baby is saying how disappointed he is about not having fun on Halloween. He describes it as "being more disappointing then being a Mets fan." The show then does a cut-away to Stewie sitting in a Mets hat at Citi Field as the PA announcer says "It's Opening Day...and here's the pitch...and the season is over!" Stewie then throws his Mets hat down in disgust.
If you're not a Mets fan (or even if you're one with a sense of humor) the joke itself is worthy of at least a chuckle. The fact that it was played live over a broadcast elevates the already popular joke to a higher status of pop culture.
The head honchos at SNY weren't laughing, however, and have launched a full-out "internal" investigation into who did it.
The question that is now risen is, are the Mets taking this too seriously?
"You can't react to criticism," said Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz, who hadn't heard of the on-air gaffe until called by The Post. "We're New York; you have a thick skin."
The Mets appear to be unfazed by the gag which means does SNY have the right to be this angry over something so trivial?
The joke wouldn't be funny or even exist if the Mets were any good. They constantly put talented players on the field who proceed to flounder like fish out of water.
If they are really this frustrated that a talking cartoon baby can get under their skin, do they need to take a step back and just breath deep?
The NY Post described SNY execs as "seething" and a network rep said that it was a "very poor decision" by the employee who had the gall to do this.
I'm sure that said employee is shaking in his boots at the terrifying Mets and their threats. The only thing terrifying about the Mets is their play.
And I'm sure Stewie would agree with me on that one.
