New York Yankees Farm System: Adam Warren Is Nothing More Than Common

There has been a lot of excitement over the farm system of the New York Yankees the last year or two, and much of it justified. But you can forget about Adam Warren being any sort of prospect worthy of such commotion.

Oh, if you look no further than the box score, you're bound to think the Yankees have something in Warren. After all, he just completed two scoreless innings against the Baltimore Orioles, lowering his spring ERA to 1.93.

Save yourself the disappointment. To watch this dude throw the ball is to know he is nothing more than the next Darrell Rasner or Dan Giese.

Warren features... well...he features nothing. He throws a mediocre fastball at 89 with next-to-no movement, he throws a breaking ball that has about as much movement as your average straight changeup, and he throws what looked to be some sort of so-so split finger pitch.

When you listen to those who followed Warren in the minors, there's always a lot of adjectives like "gutty" and "guile" and "heady." In the end, all it means is we're talking about a guy who doesn't have the stuff to miss any bats. I'm sure Warren is a nice guy who tries real hard, but none of that is going to get Kevin Youkilis out with two gone and the go-ahead run on second base.

That junk Warren was offering worked well tonight against the admittedly free-swinging Orioles. But any major league hitter who makes this dude throw the ball over the plate will tear him apart!

It's possible Warren, like many common-as-they-come right-handers before him, will junk his way to success his first time around the majors. But like all those other nothings, the A.L. East will catch on quickly, chew him up and throw him out.

Save your excitement for somebody worthy.
