You remember Chuck Greenberg, the Texas Rangers CEO who couldn't keep his foot out of his over-sized mouth? Remember him?
You won't be hearing from Mr. Greenberg anymore, at least not on matters pertaining to Major League Baseball and the Texas Rangers. It took the Rangers all of seven months to grow tired enough of Greenberg's ways to boot him out the door.
Nolan Ryan, himself a minority owner in the Rangers, was reportedly among many in the organization who'd grown sick of Greenberg's nonsense. Ryan takes over for Greenberg, adding CEO to his growing list of titles.
Greenberg is the same goof who started talking trash about New York Yankees fans five seconds after his group finally gained control, via bankruptcy auction, of the Texas Rangers from failed bit Tom Hicks.
Of course, moments after Greenberg made his ridiculous statement, he was on his knees begging forgiveness after bringing the wrath of both Yankees general partner Hal Steinbrenner and Major League Baseball down upon both himself and the Rangers organization.
Failing to learn his lesson, Greenberg was back in action months later, patting himself on the back for reporters, saying that it was his trips to Arkansas that stalled the Cliff Lee negotiations, opening the door for Lee's eventual signing in Philadelphia. Greenberg wanted credit, you see, for preventing Lee from signing with the Yankees.
Now reports reveal the true story was something entirely different. According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Greenberg's trips to Arkansas actually ANNOYED the Lee camp, which was also not thrilled with Greenberg's late-in-the-game "low-ball offers."
Bottom line: It took Chuck Greenberg about seven minutes to completely wear out his welcome with the majority of Major League Baseball and about seven months to do the same with his own team. And not a moment too soon.
Hey, Chucky, don't let the door hit ya where The Good Lord split ya!
