After making a trade with the San Diego Padres to acquire first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, the Boston Red Sox have reportedly failed to sign him to an extension.
The Red Sox had until 2 p.m. ET Sunday to complete the deal. Gonzalez reportedly is looking for a deal somewhere around $180 million.
Last season, Gonzalez batted .298 with 31 home runs and 101 RBIs and made just $4.8 million.
While the Red Sox were negotiating with Gonzalez and his agent, another of their offseason targets, free agent Jayson Werth, was completing a massive seven-year, $126 million deal with the Washington Nationals.
The Red Sox had expressed interest in both Werth and outfielder Carl Crawford, but Werth was probably a better fit in their lineup after the departure of third baseman Adrian Beltre.
Last season, Werth hit .296 with 27 homers and 85 RBIs. He also hit a league leading 46 doubles.
Werth will help the Nationals make up for the loss of slugger Adam Dunn, who signed with the Chicago White Sox on Friday.
It was a rough day for the Red Sox.
They failed to sign Gonzalez and now have lost out on Jayson Werth. Of course, Carl Crawford is still available, but there are going to be a lot of teams to compete with for the last remaining high quality outfielder on the market.
The Angels will be making a big push to sign Crawford, and the Yankees have also recently expressed interest.
As of 3:30 this afternoon, Jon Heyman of SI.com was reporting that the trade was off.
If the Red Sox are unable to make this deal happen and lose out on Gonzalez, they will have watched two of their biggest targets disapear.
