Pettitte Does His Job As Jeter and Cano Save the Day

Derek Jeter seems to be enjoying the lead off spot this season thus far.

He knocked in Cody Ransom on a huge go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning off of Rays closer, Troy Percival.

Andy Pettitte pitched into the eighth inning, but handed the ball over to Brian Bruney who got the win as Pettitte left in a tied game.

Mariano Rivera, the only player who wears No. 42, closed the game out for his second save of the season as the Yankees won, 3-2.

However, today was Jackie Robinson day and everyone was wearing the No. 42 around the league.  The MLB passed a mandatory rule to have all players wear the number on the day Robinson broke the color barrier—62 years ago on this day.

Robinson Cano, who is named after Jackie Robinson, normally wears the reverse of 42, with the No. 24 on his back. He loves this day and he showed it by proudly hitting a two-run shot to deep center field that tied the game at two.

With the victory, the Yankees move to third in the AL East, just 1.5 games out of the lead, heading into tonight's play with the Orioles and Blue Jays above them.

It looks like a complete flip of last years standings in the AL East right now, but it is still early.

The Yankees haven't even played a home game yet, until now.

On Thursday, against the Cleveland Indians, all of the stars and legends will be out in the Bronx to open up the new stadium.

With only two exhibition games against the Chicago Cubs under its belt, it is now time for the real deal—now it counts.

With the two big wins in Tampa, where the Yankees took the series after being embarrassed on Monday, they have nice momentum headed into such an important home stand.

CC Sabathia (1-1, 4.50 ERA) will get the ball for the Yankees and he will face Cliff Lee (0-2, 9.22 ERA), who will pitch for the Indians.

The likes of Grady Sizemore, Mark DeRosa, and Victor Martinez should get the first at bats, but if Sabathia gets his way, they won't do much at the plate.

We all know  Jeter will be the first Yankee to ever hit at the stadium.

I am excited for this day to finally be here and hope it opens the door to much success heading into the rest of the season.
