Phil Hughes Plays Hero Role In Big Yankees Win

Phil Hughes couldn't of been better in his return to the big league roster in his first start of the season after being recalled from Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The New York Yankees, beat up and injured, were fading fast and needed a big win to stop the streak.  They got it from Hughes.

Hughes, who has replaced the injured Chien-Ming Wang in the rotation for now, wants to let everyone know he is in the rotation to stay.

He pitched six strong innings only giving up two hits, along with six strikeouts and no runs against a tough Detroit Tigers lineup.

The problem was that he didn't receive any run support and was about to leave the game with a scoreless tie.

However, the Yankees bats finally came around in the seventh inning and it all got started with a Jose Molina sacrifice bunt.  Oddly enough, he would come up later in that same inning and hit a grand slam.

Jorge Posada, Johnny Damon, Melky Cabrera, and Robinson Cano all added an RBI each in the same along with the Molina grand slam for a 10-run seventh.

Nick Swisher added a solo shot in the ninth, his fifth on the season, to make the game 11-0, which would be the final score.

Mark Melancon, Edwar Ramirez, and Jose Veras all pitched a scoreless inning each to close out Hughes' big win.

The Yankees are now back at .500 after losing four straight and are 10-10 on the season.

On Wednesday night, the series wraps up at Comerica Park as Joba Chamberlain (0-0, 3.94 ERA) of the Yankees takes on Rick Percello (1-2, 4.50 ERA) of the Detroit Tigers.

Alex Rodriguez continues to progress during his rehab in Tampa from his March 9 hip surgery and slid on the base paths today.  He should play in a minor league game later this week and could return as early as May 9th, but no later then May 15th.
