PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired switch-hitting outfielder Delwyn Young from the Los Angeles Dodgers for either two unnamed minor league players or cash.
After returning from the disabled list, Young found himself buried on the Dodgers depth chart and has not recorded any playing time in 2009. The 5-foot-8 outfielder carries a .267 career average, but has been susceptible in the field.
There are no questions he can hit, though. With only 165 career at-bats, he just never found a place with the Dodgers.
The Pirates are expected to add him to the 25-man roster, as they have already removed relief pitcher Dave Davidson from the 40-man roster. It is expected that 25-year-old utility infielder Luis Cruz will be sent down to AAA-Indianapolis to make room for him.
Pirates General Manager Neil Huntington would also like to see the speedy Young work with infield coach Perry Hill to improve at second base and third base.
Young will not be available for the Pirates game tonight with the Houston Astros, but it is expected that he will join the major league roster within a few days.
