Possible Bench Option: Chad Tracy Edition

We all know that the Mets have plenty of work to do. They need to fix their lineup, bullpen, minor league system, and starting rotation, just to name a few issues. But one thing that people need to remember is the bench, and one guy who comes to mind that might qualify as a high-risk, high-reward option for the bench is Chad Tracy.

He could be the power bat we have been missing the last couple of years off the bench.

I know what you are going to say in response. The guy had two good seasons in Arizona. In 2005-06, Tracy hit 47 homers and knocked in 152 RBI, but since then, his stats have taken a steep turn downward.

A major reason for that was the injury bug. Tracy found himself on the DL, and he was surpassed on the depth chart by both Connor Jackson and Mark Reynolds. When he came back healthy, he found himself as the odd man out, and that is the way it has remained since then. I think he wasn’t really given a fair shake, and the Mets could take a flier.

He would serve a nice purpose. Tracy could back up both first and third, and he could be a valuable asset as a late-inning pinch hitter off of the bench. I have definitely heard some worse names thrown out there. Remember, Tracy is only 30, so this could be a positive solution for more than just this year. Maybe he will eventually become our everyday first basemen.

I know. Slow down and wait.

I like the Mets taking a chance in this case. Low-risk, high-reward is certainly the way to go in terms of the bench. We need change, and it’s about time Omar goes out and does something.
