Not even a month ago, the Rangers and free agent pitcher Ben Sheets seemed to have ironed out a preliminary two-year contract.
Things quickly fell through when doctors performing Sheets’ physical determined that he needed to have surgery on his right elbow.
The contract was thrown out, Sheets went on to have the surgery, the Milwaukee Brewers were responsible for the bill (the last team Sheets played for,) and the Rangers went on to spring training with the pitching staff they have.
It seems as though things might have changed however, with a source reporting on Tuesday that the Rangers might still have interest in Sheets and vice-a-versa.
After successful surgery Sheets is now rehabbing at TMI Sports Medicine facility in Arlington (hint hint.)
The facility is owned and operated by Texas Rangers' team doctor Dr. Keith Meister (hint, hint.)
Rangers GM Jon Daniels has already stated that there is no connection between Sheets rehabbing at Dr. Meister’s facility.
But he did state that the Texas Rangers are interested in Sheets as an option when he recovers from the surgery and is done with rehab.
Last year, Scott Feldman was the most consistent pitcher on the staff, and in his first year as a starting pitcher as well, he lead the team in quality starts. Feldman is looking forward to another strong season in the rotation.
In his first outing, Feldman struggled and couldn’t even get out of the second inning. But in his last two outings, he has gotten his groove back.
Feldman retired all six batters he faced in his next start, and then on Tuesday he gave up only one hit in the three scoreless innings he pitched against the Giants.
If he continues this progress and improvements from last season, Feldman is a lock for the No. 3 or 4 starter on the staff, and could make himself a staple in the rotation for the future.
