Red Sox Promote 1B Lars Anderson To Triple-A

The Red Sox promoted 1B Lars Anderson to the Pawtucket Red Sox this afternoon.

Considered one of the better prospects in all of baseball entering the 2009 season, Anderson saw his stock slip dramatically after hitting only .233, with nine home runs and a dismal .328 OBP for Portland (Double-A) lasty year.

But he has come out on fire in 2010. He hit .355, with a 1.086 OPS, through the first 17 games of the year, including thanks to five doubles and five home runs. Thus, he earned the promotion.

The hot start is good for the player and good for the club. Many pundits believe Anderson may never see the day when he actually suits up for the Red Sox, believing he could be a key element of a mid-summer deal with the San Diego Padres. If Theo & Company do, in fact, make a trade for Padres 1B Adrian Gonzalez, the Pads will be in need of a new first baseman - and Anderson (a California native) would almost assuredly be a part of any such deal.

The Sox might be able to put together an unbeatable package, headed by Casey Kelly, Josh Reddick and Anderson, among others.

A good start in Pawtucket could make him an indispensable trade chip this summer.
