Josh Beckett was shaky in his final spring training start before the Red Sox's season opener against Tampa Bay this Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk with just one strikeout.
This start was mainly a final tune-up for Beckett, nothing major. But the Sox's opening day starter takes every start as seriously as he would during the regular season.
Bright spots for the Red Sox included relievers Manny Delcarmen and Javier Lopez, who combined for 3.1 scoreless innings, and Rocco Baldelli, who had two hits with a run scored.
The Red Sox have three more spring training games before the regular season. Brad Penny will make his final start before he learns his fate for the start of the season on Friday against the Mets.
Clay Buchholz has had a very strong spring, with a 0.46 ERA in five starts, before he struggled Tuesday, and was told soon after that he is likely headed to AAA. But the possibility of Penny starting on rehab at Pawtucket cannot be ruled out. The final decision for the Sox will come sometime this weekend.
