Reds vs Pirates: Cueto Struggles As Reds Lose, 10-2

The Cincinnatti Reds' bats were quiet today at Great American Ballpark, and the Pirates' pitcher Paul Maholm had an easy day at the office.

The Reds, as a unit, only mustered six hits with the only extra base hit being a double by pinch hitter Micah Owings.

Shortstop Brandon Phillips went 2-3 with a pair a singles.

Jay Bruce belted a 2-RBI single in the ninth and he also was credited with a RBI on a fielder’s choice in the seventh that scored Brandon Phillips.

Starting pitcher Johnny Cueto got into trouble early on, giving up an two-run HR to Nate McLouth in the top of the first.

Cueto calmed down, but it was too late as the damage was done.

Johnny Cueto (0-1) pitched six innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits while throwing nine strikeouts and one walk in the loss.

Mike Lincoln came in to pitch the ninth and was hammered, giving up five earned runs on three hits and walking three. This included two homers: a grand slam by Ryan Doumit and a solo shot by Andy LaRoche.

The Reds' record is now 1-3

Up next, the Reds will play a 1:05 p.m. rematch with the Pirates on Easter Sunday as ace Aaron Harang (0-1) goes for the Reds against Buccos' starter Ian Snell.
