Robinson Cano and Damaso Marte returned to Yankee camp from the World Baseball Classic. Both are nursing injuries. They are supposed to be minor, but both players will see the doctor tomorrow.
According to Peter Abraham’s blog, Cano had a sore shoulder before he left for the WBC, but possibly made it worse playing three games with the Dominican team. He said that he doesn’t think the shoulder is seriously injured—just stiff—and will miss only a couple of games.
Marte has a sore left pectoral muscle that he aggravated when he was lifting weights before the final game of the WBC, that he also pitched in. He said he will only miss a few days.
“It doesn’t hurt when I pitch, only when I move,” Marte said.
If players keep coming back from the WBC with injuries, Major League Baseball is going to have to rethink the format. In 2006, quite a few pitchers who participated in the inaugural classic were injured that season. We can only hope that Derek Jeter comes back ready to go.
