Chirinos Expected to Land on DL
Sunday, April 10
Chirinos is reportedly headed to the 15-day disabled list, per ESPN.com.
Rangers Need to Replace Chirinos
Evan Grant of Sports Day noted that the Rangers will look to add another catcher. According to Wilson, the Rangers have a few replacement options:
Brett Nicholas is currently in the minor leagues, and per Wilson, if he is the option, the Rangers will need to clear a roster spot. Bryan Holaday is the only other catcher currently on the Texas roster. He filled in Saturday and went 1-for-2 with a double, RBI and run scored.
The Rangers have plenty of options to replace Chirinos but may drop a notch in the power department.
Chirinos Has Been Serviceable for Rangers
Chirinos has hit .234 with 24 home runs and 76 RBI in 189 career games with the Rangers after spending one season with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011. He had yet to throw a runner out this season, but the 31-year-old was batting .267 with one home run and two RBI this season prior to the injury.
It's never good to lose your starting catcher, and his 10 home runs in just 78 games last season were encouraging.
