The Fall Classic is officially set. The Kansas City Royals will meet the New York Mets in the World Series after a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in a clinching ALCS Game 6.
Kansas City managed to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth, thanks to Eric Hosmer's one-out single, scoring Lorenzo Cain from first.
It came a half-inning after the Blue Jays found a way to tie things up against the Royals' bullpen. Down 3-1 heading into the top of the eighth, Jose Bautista's second home run of the game tied things up off Ryan Madson.
Toronto attempted to mount a comeback with runners on first and third with no outs, but Wade Davis, who had to wait an hour between throwing pitches due to a rain delay, mowed Ben Revere and Josh Donaldson down to win the pennant.
It's the second time in as many seasons that the Royals are heading back to the World Series, as MLB via Twitter has the replay of the final out and celebration:
ESPN.com's Matthew Friedrichs caught the fireworks in action as the stadium celebrated:
And while those fireworks might have been breaking some rules, law enforcement was willing to let things slide:
Up in the box, former Royals great George Brett, who is still very much invested in the franchise, was just as ecstatic, as MLB via Twitter shows:
Actor and noted Royals fan Rob Riggle was just as excited:
Don't forget the hugs, either, as the Royals show:
For Baseball America's JJ Cooper, seeing the Royals win their second-straight pennant is unbelievable:
The Kansas City faithful joined in on the party once the final out was recorded, per KMBC9's Kris Ketz:
Upon receiving the American League Championship Trophy, Royals owner David Glass echoed the determination of his team, per Fox Sports 1:
With such a dramatic ending, the Kauffman Stadium staff had to hustle to get the champagne down to the locker rooms, as shown by KU TV's Nick Price:
Once everything was set, the party started:
Gamd 6 starter Yordano Ventura appeared to be enjoying the celebration, as @mcdkc documented:
The Royals will meet a team in the World Series that has been waiting for a ring for almost just as long, as ESPN Stats & Info pointed out:
Quite a World Series awaits us come Tuesday. A Royals team with tough hitters desperate to right their wrongs from last season will take on a Mets team stacked with young power arms that have sat down the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs in the postseason.
Kansas City can sit tight until Tuesday as they have Series home-field advantage. So they'll have four days to rest and wait for the Mets to come to them as we are set up for what could be a very entertaining championship.
