The Giants can't wait, they cannot go the distance with this team.
The San Francisco Giants offense is pathetic. The time has to be now to make a move for a offensive weapon. The move is long over due.
The San Francisco Giants rank dead last in major league baseball for offense.
Their batting average as a team is .250, their slugging percentage is .360, OPS is .669 and their OBP is .309.
These numbers are unacceptable, especially for a team that's pitching staff ranks ninth in the entire majors. The pitching is there, if they made a move for at least one bat, they could contend.
Two bats could put them over the top.
According to ESPN insider and MLBTraderumors.com, the Giants have interest in Dan Uggla. This would be a great addition to a anemic offense that is dying for a true middle of the order hitter.
But what would the Marlins want in return for Uggla: Matt Cain, Tim Alderson, Madison Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum, anyone?
If thats what they want then they can keep Mr. Uggla. Those Four Horsemen of the Giants future are coveted more then the Holy Grail and rightfully so.
They should be untouchable.
So, Jonathan Sanchez has to be the sacrificial lamb. He is the only one that is truly expendable and that won't cause a tremendous uproar, but does he carry value at the moment, not really.
He has been shaky this season with a 2-4 record and a 4.60 era.
He could serve a club better as a reliever.
Travis Ishikawa hasn't panned out offensively, but hey he did get his first home run yesterday against the braves. His batting average is at .250! An upgrade at first base would be ideal.
Could Ishikawa be packaged in a deal for a bat?
Probably not.
Miguel Cabrera should be examined as a possibility to play first base and have Pablo Sandoval remain at third base. If the Tigers shopped Cabrera, which they probably won't.
That would be a hefty price tag to pick up along with the departure of key prospects.
No Thanks.
Brian Sabean better not get trigger happy. Brian Sabean is under the gun. He is in a contract year and he has to be feeling the heat.
He has crippled the team with some past trades, but "I am not here to talk about the past."
Sabean should try to make a move for Uggla by moving Sanchez and Fred Lewis, or Travis Ishikawa.
Other names being thrown around that the Giants may be interested in are Nick Johnson, Aubrey Huff, and Mark DeRosa. Those three guys aren't worth top prospects.
The two deals that need to be done are Sanchez for Uggla and Matos/Hinshaw for Nick Johnson. Those two guys would bolster the Giants offense and provide the help the pitching staff most desperately needs.
Sabean needs to make a move but not at a drastic cost that could hurt the franchise a few years down the road. It would be nice if he were patient but there is a certain haste that a move must be made especially losing five of six on the road.
